A Letter from Rumi Spice CEO Keith Alaniz

Dear Rumi Spice Community,

Three years ago, on August 15th, 2021, the world watched as the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan. For many, it was a moment of profound uncertainty and fear for the future.

For us at Rumi Spice, it was a pivotal time—a moment when our commitment to our mission and our partners in Afghanistan was tested like never before.

As I reflect on these past three years, I am filled with a deep sense of pride in what we have accomplished together. Despite the challenges, Rumi Spice has continued to thrive, and most importantly, we have remained steadfast in our mission to empower Afghan women.

Today, Rumi Spice stands as the largest private employer of women in Afghanistan, employing over 4,000 women annually. Our saffron, one of the most precious spices in the world, is more than just a product—it's a symbol of resilience, hope, and the enduring strength of Afghan women. These women are the backbone of the saffron industry, and their involvement is critical to its success. Without them, the industry would collapse, and Afghanistan would lose a vital source of economic stability.

When we started Rumi Spice, we made a conscious decision to build a business that could endure, no matter the political climate. We chose not to align ourselves overtly with any government, instead focusing on creating a sustainable, for-profit social enterprise that trades value for value. This decision has allowed us to continue our work even in the most challenging of times.

The past three years have not been easy. The Taliban's efforts to roll back the progress made in women's rights have been relentless. Yet, the saffron industry, deeply rooted in Afghan tradition and now inextricably linked with the empowerment of women, has proven resilient. Our business, led and operated by our Afghan partners, has continued unabated, and in some ways, the absence of conflict has even allowed for smoother operations.

Today, as we mark this significant anniversary, I want to thank you—our loyal customers and supporters. Your commitment to purchasing our products, sharing our story, and standing by us through thick and thin has made all the difference. Together, we are not just selling spices; we are creating sustainable livelihoods, preserving a vital industry, and most importantly, empowering women in a country where their roles are increasingly under threat.

Looking ahead, our work is more important than ever. The economy in Afghanistan, once buoyed by international aid, has largely collapsed, leaving the people of Afghanistan to rely on what remains. Rumi Spice is not just a business; it's a lifeline for thousands of Afghan families, and we are committed to expanding our impact. Our goal is to support 100,000 Afghan livelihoods within the next five years, and with your continued support, I believe we can achieve it.

Thank you for being a part of our journey.

With gratitude,

-Keith Alaniz
